Psychological assessments

At Into Minds, we provide a range of psychological assessment and diagnostic services. A psychological assessment can evaluate thinking, learning and behaviour and assist in identifying ways to support learning and development. An assessment can be used to assist in planning school programs, to identify needs for special services, and to help access resources in the community. A psychological assessment can help identify:
  • Cognitive, academic and executive functioning strengths and weaknesses.
  • Individual abilities, competencies, and strategies to support building capacity and positive functioning.
  • Behavioural, social and/or emotional regulation concerns and competencies.
  • The presentation of a learning and/or neurodevelopmental disorder (e.g. Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder).

The assessment process at into minds

1. Referral

To begin the process, families can contact our admin team via email. We will gather some brief information about your concerns and provide an initial quote for the assessment. Please note that this quote may change slightly after your psychologist has explored your child’s needs in more detail.

2. Intake Forms

You will be sent intake and consent forms via email to complete prior to booking the assessment. These forms help us gain a better understanding of your child’s background, strengths, experiences, and current areas of support need.

3. Triage & Allocation

Our directors, Megan and Carly, carefully review each referral to ensure families are matched with the psychologist best suited to their child’s needs and presentation.

4. Invoice & Booking

Once the assessment plan has been confirmed, an invoice will be issued. Assessment appointments are booked following payment.

5. Assessment Sessions

The assessment process usually includes:

  • A parent interview session (completed either in person or via phone/telehealth), and

  • one or more assessment sessions with the child or young person.

Where possible and appropriate, we may offer school-based assessment sessions for convenience. Otherwise, appointments are conducted at our office in Cameron Street, Launceston.

Our assessments aim to understand each child’s unique neurotype, learning profile, strengths, and support needs in a respectful and neuroaffirming way.

6. Report Writing

Following the assessment, your psychologist will prepare a comprehensive report outlining the assessment findings, recommendations, and any relevant diagnoses.

Our psychologists aim to write reports in clear, concise, and straightforward language so families feel informed, supported, and able to better understand their child’s learning profile, strengths, and support needs.

 7. Feedback Session

A feedback consultation will then be booked with your psychologist. During this session, you will receive a copy of the report and have the opportunity to discuss the results, recommendations, and next steps in detail.

functional Assessments

A functional assessment determines an individual's ability to complete the practical, everyday activities required to function, meet environmental demands, care for themselves, and interact with others effectively and independently. A functional assessment can be used to identify the presence of an Intellectual Disability and/or the severity of a neurodevelopmental disorder.
